Google is now 100% mobile-first. Are you?
Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of a website for indexing and ranking. It means if your website is not mobile-friendly, you can expect a negative impact on your search ranking. By March 2021, Google will have switched ALL websites from desktop-first to mobile-first indexing.
Page speed has been a ranking factor since 2010 on desktop and 2018 on mobile.
As of March 2018, Google started slowly implementing their “Mobile First” algorithm into its search engines. On June 16, 2021, Google began the rollout of a broad core algorithm update which includes another set of speed-related ranking signals. These updates focus on “page experience”. These ranking signals are called the Core Web Vitals (CWVs).
In a nutshell, websites that load faster and perform better across mobile, tablet and desktop devices, will rank higher in Google’s search.
What is “Mobile-First” indexing?
It is a term that Google uses to describe its latest major change in how Google indexes websites based on site load time. In July 2018, Google announced that web page with slow-loading content would have worse performance on both desktop and mobile searchers. Also starting July 1, 2019, Mobile-First Indexing will be used to index all new websites which are previously unknown to Google Search.
This means that site load speed (especially on mobile) is becoming just as important as website contents in terms of ranking on Google. For example, if two websites have the same content, the one that loads faster will be ranked higher on Google. Mobile First technology creates mobile optimized websites which load much faster than websites built with regular page builders.
How is Mobile First different from regular page builders?
Most page builders are aimed to design web pages for larger desktop screen. Web pages are then condensed to fit tablets or mobile phones. The web pages then become “Mobile Friendly” or “Mobile Responsive”. Mobile First page builder completely switches the process.
Mobile First is a special kind of mobile site builder which uses Mobile First technology to construct web pages for mobile phones. Content elements are then added to the web pages to fit on larger screens.
It makes total sense because everything is going mobile today! Imagine if contents on a web page are great but it takes forever to load, it will give users a very bad user experience.
What is the difference between mobile responsive and mobile first?
While mobile-friendly and mobile-responsive websites will still be ranked by Google, they are different from Mobile First websites. Regular websites are often built for desktop screens first and then made to fit on mobile later.
Mobile responsive uses CSS to condense the web page originally built for desktop on smaller mobile devices. Mobile first, on the other hand, uses a mobile responsive framework designed to work perfectly on mobile devices.
Benefits of Mobile First web design
1. fast loading web pages
2. works perfectly on all devices
3. low bounce rates
4. very mobile friendly
5. higher search engine indexing
